RAM presents Undercurrents, a group exhibition marking the turn of the seasons and gathering artists tied to the gallery through friendship, collaboration, and history. At its center is water—elemental, elusive, and essential—appearing here as subject, material, and metaphor.
In California, water is never neutral. It nourishes and sustains, yet it also signals fragility, scarcity, and desire. It flows through agriculture and industry, through surf culture and desert reservoirs, carrying with it a nostalgia for long summers, endless coastlines, and the shimmering promise of the West. At the same time, water seduces: an alluring, bodily force that draws us toward immersion, surrender, and abandon.
The works in Undercurrents chart these shifting tides: water as force and memory, as symbol and sustainer, as presence and absence. Together, they suggest that beneath the surface of daily life runs a current that is at once vital and precarious—reminding us of what binds, entices, and threatens to divide our shared landscape and cultural imagination.
